Entry in all divisions will be via online registration.

Participants in the Hoe Tawhiti 16-20km and the Hoe Poto 8-10km Distance races (Sun), and the Hoe Toa Technical Races (Sat) MUST ENTER before 8pm on Friday 22nd March 2019. This is a requirement to ensure appropriate safety planning.

Participants in the Hoe Ngahau 1km Fun and Hoe Marino Flatwater 2.5km and 5km Races may enter on the day. Entries will close one hour prior to the race start.

ALL OTHER ONLINE ENTRIES CLOSE AT 8pm on Friday 22nd March, 2019.

The organizers reserve the right to reject or cancel any entry.


Event Check-in / Late Registration

ALL PADDLERS MUST CHECK-IN PRIOR TO RACING. If you have pre-registered online you may authorize another person to collect your race pack on your behalf.

Thurs 21 March 5.30pm-8.00pm Pre-event Check-in and Late Registration for ALL RACES at Event Hub. All paddlers will receive their race shirts and numbered race bibs.

Fri 22 March 8am-8pm Pre-Event Check-in and Late Registration ALL RACES.

*All Hoe Toa Technical and Distance Race paddlers must collect race shirts and numbered race bibs before 8pm Friday. If you have pre-registered online you may authorize another person to collect your race pack on your behalf.


Sat 23 March 8am-12pm – Check in for Hoe Ngahau (Sat). Late registration and check in for Hoe Marino Flatwater Races (Sun).

Sun 24 March Late registration and check in for the Hoe Marino Flatwater Racing on Sunday 25th March at Orewa SLSC, from 10am to 12pm.

Compulsory Sign on and Gear Check for the Hoe Tawhiti 16-20km and Hoe Poto 8-10km Distance Racing on Sunday 24 March at the Start Location (Otarawao Bay or Army Bay), from 11am-1pm.

Race Briefing

The verbal safety briefing will cover course layout/description, event rules, safety issues and paddler questions. Safety of the participants is the number one priority of the Race Director and the event staff. All paddlers must attend their Race Briefing. See Event Schedule for Briefing Times.

Disclaimer of liability

Paddlers participate in the event entirely at their own risk. The organisers accept no liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to, during, or after the event. It is the sole responsibility of the paddler to decide whether or not to race. All paddlers must sign a liability waiver on entry.

Each entrant must sign the indemnity declaration on the Entry Form before the event. If under 18, the parent or guardian must sign.


Prizegiving for the Saturday Technical Races (except for the Hoe Ngahau Fun Race) will take place at the Prizegiving BBQ and Beergarden from 6pm on Saturday 23th March, along with a live auction for boards donated by our event sponsors.

An “On the Couch” Public Media Conference and Live Television will be held before the Saturday prize giving from 5.30pm.

Hoe Ngahau Fun Race Medals will be awarded on the finish line at the end of race.

Medals for the Hoe Marino Flatwater Races will be awarded immediately after racing at the event finish location.

Prize giving for the Magrette Hoe Tawhiti and Hoe Poto Distance races will commence soon after racing concludes, at Prizegiving BBQ on Sunday 25th March at the Orewa SLSC from 5.15pm.

All Combined Race Trophies will be awarded on Sunday night. Meals can be pre-ordered and prepaid with registration.


A range of Foodtrucks will be on site to provide meals for paddlers and their supporters.  These can be pre-ordered and purchase along with your online entry.  There will be NO alcohol served or sold at the event.  Participants are allowed to BYO on the Reserve (there is a liquor ban on the beach).  Please drink responsibly and take home any empties.

Hoe Toa is a Zero Waste event.  All food containers will be compostable or recyclable.
