Age and Eligibility

  • Paddler class will be determined by gender and by age as at 1st January 2018
  • All competitors can choose to be registered in their age group, or as an “open age” competitor
  • The mens race board class is 14’ and Under.
  • The womens race board classes are 14’ and Under, OR 12’6 and Under
  • Womens’ NZ Trophy Class is 12’6.
  • Race categories will only be awarded at prizegiving when there are three or more paddlers competing in that category in each race.

  • U/13 : 12 years and under on 1st January 2018
  • U/17 : 16 years and under on 1st January 2018
  • Open : Mens/Womens All Age
  • O/50 : Masters Women: 50 years of age and over
  • O/50 : Masters Men: 50 years of age and over
  • Age group for medals will be determined by age on 1st January 2018.
  • If women wish to race 14’ boards they will not be recognised separately as U/17 or O/50. Age group medals will only be awarded to women on 12’6 boards.
  • Womens’ NZ Trophy Class is 12’6 (Junior U17, Open and Masters O50).
  • The International Hoe Toa Champions Trophy can be won on any board 14’ or Under (including 12’6).
  • Mens Open Age and Masters medals will only be awarded in 14’ and Under Class (this includes 12’6 boards).
  • Junior and Junior Elite Trophy Class is 12’6 & Under

Gender

Transgender people may participate in the NZ SUP Nationals 2018 and be eligible for event placing in accordance with the 2017 NZSUP Transgender Policy published on the NZSUP website Download Transgender Policy Here

Nationality

Paddlers of all nationalities are eligible to race and be awarded results and prize money in both the Distance Races and the Technical Races. Paddlers wishing to qualify for the “NZ National Champion” Combined Perpetual Trophies must hold a NZ Passport or a NZ permanent resident visa at the time of entry.

Trophy Classes

New Zealand SUP National Champions will be crowned from their best combined results in both the Hoe Tawhiti (16-20km) Distance Race and the Hoe Toa 4km Technical Race, and awarded trophies in the following classes: 14’ and Under Men, 12’6 and Under Women, 14’ and Under Masters Men.

NZ SUP Champions in the 12’6” and Under Masters Women, 12’6’ and Under Junior Elite Girls, and 12’6 and Under Junior Elite Boys will be crowned from the best combined results in the Hoe Poto (8-10km) and Hoe Toa (4km) Races.

Junior New Zealand 12’6 and Under Boys and 12’6 and Under Girls NZ SUP Champions will be crowned from the best combined results in the Hoe Toa 2.5km Technical and the Hoe Marino 5km Flatwater Races.

NZ Paddlers Association Prone Championship Trophies will be awarded to paddlers with the best results separately in the Hoe Poto 8-10km and in the Hoe Toa 4km, in the 12’ Prone Men, 12’ Prone Women, Junior U/17 Prone 10’6 Boys and U/17 Prone 10’6 Girls Divisions, and the overall prone race winners will be flown to the Waterman Tahiti Tour by Air Tahiti Nui.

All New Zealand Champion Perpetual Trophies will be awarded to New Zealand Citizens or those holding Permanent Residency Certificates.

Hoe Toa Trophy

One Mens and One Womens International HOE TOA Champion Trophy (Open Age, 14’ and Under) will be awarded to the Overall Combined Hoe Tawhiti and Hoe Toa Race Winners in the Mens SUP and Womens SUP Divisions. All nationalities, including NZ Paddlers, are eligible to win these take home trophies to keep. Trophies can be won on any board length 14’ or Under (including 12’6) excluding Unlimited Class + Foils.
Novice/Surfboard/Juniors/Inflatable Classes

This includes all Novices, surfboard men, surfboard women, inflatables and juniors.
Classes may be combined, or race with another class where numbers are insufficient or for any other reason at the discretion of the Race Director. The Junior/Novice race will only take place if race officials consider the conditions are suitable.

ISA Worlds NZ Team Selection

Hoe Toa is the primary selection event for the NZ SUP and Prone Paddleboard Race Team traveling to the 2018 ISA World Paddleboard Championships in Brazil. All paddlers wishing to be selected for the team must meet qualifying criteria as set out in the NZSUP and Surfing New Zealand Selection Policy (see Categories).
Results from this event will be taken into consideration by the NZSUP Selection Committee. To be eligible for NZ Team selection paddlers must hold a NZ Passport at time of entry and paddle in the designated “Open Age NZ Trophy Class” for their gender (eg Womens 12’6 Hoe Tawhiti + Hoe Toa, Mens 14’ Hoe Tawhiti + Hoe Toa).

SUP & Prone Board Classes

SUP Unlimited Class (Hoe Tawhiti 16-20km Race Only)
Length – Over 14’ or Foilboard
Any board or SUP Foil Board with or without rudder

SUP 14’ & Under Class
Length – 14’0 maximum
Board Weight – No Weight Restriction. Board Design – No minimum dimensions.
Single hull, stationary/non-correctional fins and a fin box is allowed.

SUP 12’6 and Under Class:
Length – 12’6 maximum
Board Weight – No Weight Restriction. Board Design – No minimum dimensions. Surfboards allowed.

SUP Surfboard Class:
Length – 12’6 maximum
Board Weight – No Weight Restriction.
The board marshall will determine if the paddler’s board meets the correct specifications to allow entry into the surfboard class. The board must be a surfboard style in shape with a maximum length of 12’6. Boards in the surfboard class may not have displacement or concave hulls.

SUP Inflatable Class:
Length – 14’ maximum or 12’6 maximum if specified
Board shall be hollow and inflated by air. Fixed Fin. No rudder. No hollow construction hard boards.

12’ Prone:
Length – 12’ maximum
Board Weight – No Weight Restriction. Board Design – No minimum dimensions.

10’6 Prone:
Length – 10’6 maximum
Board Weight – No Weight Restriction. Board Design – No minimum dimensions.
