THE VAIKOBI 2018 AUCKLAND KING AND
QUEEN OF THE HARBOUR: 21st APRIL

Right Paddlers – you’ve all had enough time to recover from last year’s epic ‘Normandy Landing’. This year will be perfect balmy downwind conditions, I promise haha. The emphasis of this year’s event will be on simplicity, which suits the philosophy behind this years Vaikobi Naming Rights sponsor superbly!

The 2018 Vaikobi Auckland King and Queen of the Harbour event will take place over the Saturday 21st April, with the 22nd April reserved as a contingency day in the event of unsafe weather on the Saturday. Exciting Long and Short Courses have been selected to predominantly cater for downwind paddling, all of whoch will either start or finish at Takapuna Boating Club. There will be no ferries or island adventures this year, in an effort to keep costs down and keep the event simpler. Three Long Course options and a there-and-back Short Course from Takapuna Beach will see competitors racing over the best downwind conditions the Hauraki Gulf has to offer, with a post event barbeque and prize-giving for the competitors, family and spectators. The weekend will see a number of visiting 2018 World Surfski Series Champions and leading paddlers, leading paddleboarders, returning Olympians and other celebrities in their own right, with a technique clinic and some world class racing.

Takapuna Based Courses: This event is the New Zealand leg of the World Surfski Series and the Canoe Racing New Zealand race for Surfski (both Ocean ski, SLS Spec ski categories and Doubleski), SUP and Waka-Ama (OC1 and OC2). Once again Long Courses (approx. 23-km’s) and Short Courses (approx. 10-km’s) have been planned for prevailing wind conditions. Race Headquarters will be Takapuna Boating Club this year, which featured as the host venue for the 2017 World Masters Games, which will be the start and/or finish location, and the prize-giving venue.

Vaikobi Naming Rights Sponsor: Having been part of the  sponsorship team for the last 4 years we are thrilled to have Vaikobi back this year, now center stage as event Naming Rights Sponsor! Pat Langley of Vaikobi had the following message:

“Vaikobi is just so excited to be part of this Iconic race yet again and to step up as a major sponsor of the 2018 King and Queen of the Harbour. Ocean Paddling in NZ has so much diversity with strength across all the disciplines- Ski, Waka-Ama, SUP, Prone, Mutlisport and Surf Lifesaving and we are stoked to be able to have the opportunity to be part of this fantastic scene in New Zealand.
I look forward to once again being able to join you on the start line on April 29th in Auckland!”
